A BOOK TO SAVOUR AND TO CHERISH
Kashi House's first novel, released today as a revised and expanded second edition, explores the perilous lives of Sikh soldiers on the western front during the Great War.
First released in 2018, an almost-forgotten family mystery surrounding her grandfather Tom’s first wife prompted author Vee Walker to explore his 1914–18 war diary and turn it into an award-winning novel.
‘UNPUTDOWNABLE’
A prizewinner at the SAHR Military History Fiction Awards 2019, Major Tom’s War explores how the destinies of a stubborn former Calcutta solicitor Tom and an equally-obstinate VAD nurse Evie are changed forever by the Great War. In a story described by TV star Dame Penelope Keith DBE DL as ‘unputdownable' and historian John Keay as ‘a gem of a story, beautifully told’, author Vee Walker weaves a satisfyingly-intricate yet real plot based on the true experiences of her unlikely grandparents and those they love – and hate.
SIKHS ON THE FRONT LINE
Among the book’s key characters are two Sikh cavalrymen, Amar Singh and Harnam Singh, one a steadfast friend of Major Tom, the other his self-appointed protector.
This second edition includes a completely new chapter in which Harnam Singh relates the arrival of Indian troops at Marseilles, a port city in southern French, before heading off to the Front.
A MYSTERY SOLVED
Also revealed in this new edition are the identities of two of the men captured in an iconic photograph showing a lady pinning flowers on Indian soldiers marching down the Champs-Élysées on Bastille Day in 1916. To find out their names, get your copy of the book today!
